John Whitfield of Goathill in the parish of Wetheral, guilty of the murder of William Cockburn, by shooting him, I th ehigh road near Armathwaite in the parish of Hesket in the Forest on 8^th May 1769 - wounding him in the thigh so he died on 13^th May.

In the Quarter Sessions papers it is stated he was in prison “from Tuesday, (1^st August) the day he received sentence to the Wednesday week following when he was executed.”
