John William Johnson was a forty nine year old farm labourer from Hetton-le-Hole, Durham who had been living with a Mary Addison for sometime. In September she told him of her intention to marry someone else. After she left, he followed her and shot her dead. He refused any form of legal aid and insisted on pleading guilty. He was convicted and hanged by James Billington on 22nd December 1891 at Durham.
